Story No. 8 BOWIE
Story No. 8 BOWIE
'David Robert Jones aka David Bowie (1947-2016) was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Born in Brixton, but at eight Bowie moved to Bromley with his family. In 1955 they settled at 4 Plaistow Grove, notable as David Bowie’s home for more than a decade. Here he attended Bromley Tech (Ravens Wood School), learnt art, got his first saxophone, was by accident hit in his left eye, and here his music developed from it’s humble beginnings through to the time of”Space Oddity” – his first commercially successful record.
In Bromley, he also organized the local free Growth Summer Festival, where he performed on the local ‘Bowie Bandstand’ (now listed).
‘Plaistow Grove’ in Bromley was his main childhood home and the place where he transformed into the musical innovator and cultural icon David Bowie.'
