STORY NO. 9 FIRE HYDRANT 12:

'In May 1904, a street sweeper in New York had forgotten a wrench beside a fire hydrant. A boy came by and opened the fire hydrant and threw the wrench away. The little boy’s prank ended up being a phenomenon.

For more than a hundred years, the fire hydrants in New York have been used to spray water on the citizens, so they could cool down when the weather was hot. It became a summer tradition in the streets of NYC. But to reduce the amount of wasted water, the city began distributing sprinkler caps in the 1950s.

There is an iconic scene with a flowing hydrant in Spike Lee’s 1989 movie "Do the right thing".

Today, the fire hydrants are iconic landmarks of the New York City environment. Fire Hydrant 12 stands in the Meatpacking District, 621 Hudson St., NY.
