STORY NO. 2 AUG 43:

'During World War ll and following the fall of Mussolini, Milan became a strategic military target. Because of Milan’s position as the main economic and industrial center in Italy, the British Bomber Command decided to start a series of heavy bombings, to persuade the Badoglio government to surrender.

Most of Milan's famous public and historical buildings were hit during the raid. The Milan Cathedral and The Alfa Romeo plant included. Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting "The Last Supper" amazingly survived the huge damage on the Santa Maria delle Grazie church due to protective sandbags.

The shrapnel hole in the lamppost at Piazza delle Repubblica is dated August 1943. It is a silent reminder of the raids in Milan.'
